The first part of our Estate Planning 101 series:
Lesson 1 – What is Estate Planning?
A commonly accepted definition of Estate Planning is a plan that includes the following:
A way to maintain and control your assets while alive and well,
A way to provide for yourself and your loved ones if you become disabled or incapacitated,
A way to give what you have to whom you want, the way you want, when you want (alive or otherwise), and
A way to minimize the impact and amount of professional fees, court costs and taxes.
These four goals are generally desired but rarely understood. A comprehensive estate plan includes the legal, medical and financial instruments and advice that allow you to accomplish these goals.
